Blogging for Human Rights: Every Child's Right.....

28. (1) Every child has the right : -

d) to be protected from maltreatment, neglect, abuse or degradation

Statistics show an average of five children are raped every hour of every day, of every week, of every year in South Africa. And these figures are from 5 years ago.

Baby girls as young as a few months old are raped to within an inch of their lives and so violently that their internal organs have to be replaced surgically. Why? Because there is a myth in SA that sex with a virgin will cure HIV/AIDS.

Here in Uganda there are HUGE billboards about HIV/AIDS. About not having relationships with "sugar daddies" to "real men stick to one woman" type of billboards. I don't remember EVER having seen any billboards in South Africa.

Admittedly I am a previously advantaged individual that had access to a good education and do not venture into townships but PDI's (Previously Disadvantaged Individuals) do actually venture out of the townships and into commercial and residential areas that I would frequent too.

It's time for SA to start stepping up the HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns and to impose tougher sentences on the inhuman savages that take away the rights of the innocents when they maltreate, neglect, abuse or degrade them.
