Never a dull moment....

Riots have broken out in Kampala. We're into the second day - and depending on which newspaper you read, there have been 3 or 7 or 10 people killed. Scores have been injured. Basically - it's because the Kabaka (the Buganda King) wants to go and visit Kayunga (a district) and there's a dispute over the area so Buganda supporters are a bit miffed about it. I think anyway.... The Reuters story is here

Stupid thing is, until Mike came home VERY early yesterday evening I had noooo idea what was going on. Collected the kids from school as normal, did a bit of grocery shopping, went to a friends house and drank wine while the kids played. A normal day really...!!!

Today however - everyone knows about it and classes only had about 50% of their kids at school, the British High Commission sent out a message during the morning that they recommend the children get collected. By the time I got to school at 12H30 to fetch Jason, the parents were being phoned to collect all children. I have a friends daughter here who said that she saw the rioters from her classroom....!!!

Anyway - we're home now so I don't really know what is going on. TV Uganda is playing music videos and NTV Uganda is showing "Thats so Raven" *rolls eyes*. BBC has a man on the ground reporting on it (....from freaking Nairobi) so I'm sure he has "up to the minute updates" for us!!!!! BBC and Sky News are reporting on it although the fact that there is no permanent memorial at ground zero in NYC seems to be headlines today....

I was at the office this morning. I had an interview scheduled so I had to go. While I was interviewing the guy, shots were ringing out and police cars were hurtling up and down the roads, sirens blaring. The poor guy was terrified!!!! Not sure if it was the interview or the fact that he had to make his way back home through all the problem areas.

Here's some pics from the roof of our building....
You know there's a problem when the Red Cross are driving around with their flags up!!!!

We came to the conclusion that this was either tear gas or a smoke bomb because we saw people running in all different directions immediately after it went off.

The riot police "strutting"

The pall of smoke that was hanging over Kampala this morning.

Join the twitter link http://twitter.com/#search?q=%23Kampala. We threw the radios and TVs out of the window yesterday. We're doing our own 'citizen' updates and could do with the view from your neck of the woods.
